Get the Most Out of Your Plan
Dental insurance can be complicated to navigate, especially because every plan is different. We want to ensure that you get the most out of your investment in coverage without having to deal with the hassle of navigating your plan without having a strong understanding of it. Our dentistry team is happy to file claims on your behalf, and we’re always here if you have any questions about your coverage. Below, we’ve provided some helpful basics to get you started.
Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
To better understand how your dental insurance plan works, you’ll need to know a few key terms:
- This is the amount of money that your insurance company requires you to pay out-of-pocket before your benefits kick in. In most plans, you can get your checkup and cleaning without having to pay the deductible since they’re 100 percent covered.
- This is the amount that you pay monthly or annually to be insured.
- This is the maximum amount that your dental insurance company will pay out for over the course of a year towards your treatments.
Most dental insurance plans renew on January 1st, which means the deductible and maximum will reset. That’s why it’s recommended that you receive any treatments you need before the new year while your maximum is already paid.
What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?
It’s important to note that most dental insurance plans have varying benefits, so in order to find out if yours will cover a certain treatment, it’s best to contact them directly. However, many companies use a 100-80-50 coverage structure, which means they cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic treatments like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more serious procedures like root canal therapy.
